Buying your first electric guitar can seem like a pretty daunting experience. Having no doubt admired many an axe-wielder, the obvious idea would be to buy the same guitar as one of your heroes. The problem with that is the equally obvious issue of money. Unless you0re willing to spend several thousand pounds on a plank of wood you can barely play, a few helpful hints can ensure that you buy the right guitar to suit your needs, skill level and budget.
The right type of guitar will depend on the style of music you are most likely to play. For example, if heavy metal is your thing, a semi-hollow body guitar, like the Gibson ES-355, made popular in recent times by such luminaries as Noel Gallagher, will probably not be what you0re looking for. For the right style, see what kind of guitars your main influences are playing and see if there are cheaper versions available.

Many would agree that sweep picking is one of the hardest yet most rewarding guitar techniques to master. Of all the techniques I0d have to say that sweep picking is the one that is most often done wrong, so I0m going to tell you the most commonly made sweep picking mistakes so you can avoid them. Oh, and please bear in mind the most important thing with sweep-picking is to practise slowly and accurately!…more on this later.
Firstly let0s make sure we know what sweep picking is.
Sweep picking is a very efficient way of picking. You may have heard of alternate picking which involves alternating between picking downstrokes and upstrokes. Try playing the arpeggio in figure 1 using alternate picking:
Figure 1
E||————10–13–13–10————–||
B||——–11———————-11———||
G||*–12——————————12—-*||
D||*——————————————-*||
A||———————————————||
E||———————————————||
……….d….d..d…..u….d….u…….u….u
d=downstroke
u=upstroke
Not easy is it? That0s because in this example, alternate picking has a lot of wasted motion. After you play the first note with a downstroke you then need to play the second note with an upstroke. To do so you first have to pass over the B-string and pick 0up0. You then have to skip over the B-string to get to the next note on the E-string etc, etc. And that0s just the first few notes. How very inefficient!
Now […]
